KARMA GUEN
Since 1987, the Karma Guen Diamond Way Buddhist Centre has been a place for intense spiritual development. Karma Guen in the Andalusian mountains is an ideal place for meditation, studies of Buddhist philosophy and giving a hand with the activities of the Karma Kagyu lineage and building the local centre.
Karma Guen was built by Dorrit and Pedro Gomez in the site of an original village of Aldea Alta, as an expression of gratitude to their first Buddhist teacher – Lama Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah Nydahl. The centre is dedicated to the main Karma Kagyu Lineage holder – the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje.
Karma Guen is the first place in Europe where the Kalachakra Stupa was built. This type of stupas is very rare, there are only five stupas of this kind worldwide. This Stupa is 13 meters high and takes an area of 49 square metres. In 1994, Lobpon Tsechu Rinpoche inaugurated this Stupa together with Lama Ole Nydahl. In 2004, the Gompa of Thaye Dorje was built. Thanks to them, Karma Guen is a sought-for meditation place by practitioners from Spain, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and Northern and South Americas. With more than 330 sunny days and pleasant temperatures throughout the year, Karma Guen is an ideal place for intense practice.
Open retreats are very popular, as the practitioners can combine intense meditation with the possibility of taking part in everyday activities and projects of the centre. For advanced practitioners, there are two caves at the Kalachakra Stupa for closed retreats.
Karma Guen is a unique place for Buddhist practitioners to whom – as the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje said – it offers one of the best conditions for practice in Europe. The strength of the transmission, the power field of the Stupa and the gompa as well as the enthusiasm of students offer a lot of inspiration for Buddhist practice.
